Don't talk to cops.
Do not talk to cops.
Seriously.
Here's why.
Hey, I'm Cody Harnish, UCMJ attorney.
When approached by law enforcement.
Anything you say.
Can and will be used against you.
Here's why keeping quiet is often your best defense.
One, you have the right to do so. You have the right to remain silent.
Use it.
Just because you're in the military doesn't mean you don't.
Politely decline to answer questions.
Until you have legal representation.
Right to counsel.
Ask for a lawyer immediately.
It's your right, and it's crucial to protect yourself.
Avoid self-incrimination.
Even innocent statements can be twisted or misunderstood.
Potentially incriminating you.
Remember, don't talk to cops without a lawyer present.
It's not about hiding something. It's about protecting your constitutional rights.
You can answer their questions.
When you have a lawyer present.
And if they don't like that, they're definitely not trying to help you.
Remember, anyone reading you your rights is not your friend.
